by Priscilla Kidder

The soft economy and the trend toward greener living make this the ideal time to start using cloth diapers. Parents everywhere are more concerned than ever about exposing their children to environmental toxins. The informed parents are also concerned about overflowing landfills and chemical by-products used in disposable diapers.

It s been estimated that approximately five million tons of untreated waste and a total of 2 billion tons of urine, feces, plastic and paper are added to landfills annually. The untreated waste placed in landfills by dirty disposable diapers is also a possible danger to contaminating ground water It takes around 80,000 pounds of plastic and over 200,000 trees a year to manufacture the disposable diapers for American babies alone.

The health of a baby s skin is improved by the use of cloth diapers and the naturally anti-microbial properties of bamboo fabric make bamboo ideal for cloth diapers. Studies have shown that the incidence of diaper rash increased with the use of disposable diapers. Babies who wear cloth diapers are generally changed more often, and potty train sooner. This is because they are able to feel the wetness against their skin and learn to react to it appropriately. In disposable diapers, children are often left for hours unchanged with ever expanding chemical gels swelling up each time a child wets.

The economy is causing many parents to cut back on expenses where ever possible. One way to save up to $2,000 per child is to use cloth diapers. If you use cloth diapers for more than one child, the savings are even more significant. An easy and economical method of cloth diapering is to use pre folds and inexpensive nylon wrap or pull on covers. If you want ease of use, then pocket or “all in ones” may be the way to go.

I cloth diapered my five children, over a period of 20+ years. My first two were in diaper service quality prefolds and wrap style covers. I began making my own covers for them just to have a cute variety of prints. My last child is potty trained now, but he wore fitted cloth diapers and wool covers. The wool was new for me, and I started out making his covers out of old sweaters made of wool. When I launched Be-Bops in 2004, I began using wool interlock and and blends, and adding unique applique s to my wool wraps. When I think of how many disposable diapers I would have used for five children, it’s mind boggling. One of the greatest pleasures of using cloth on your baby is knowing that not only are you wrapping your precious child in comfortable natural fabrics, but that you aren’t adding to our already overflowing landfills. Isn’t it time to take a step back, and explore the use of cloth.

Bamboo Baby Cloth Diapers are manufactured by Dri-line Products, in Edmonton, Alberta. I can personally ‘vouch’ for Dri-line and all of their products. I’ve been in the factory dozens, if not 100’s of times. I can tell you that Dri-line is a fair employer, staffed by Canadian workers. Workers that make a fair wage, get a 50 week maternity leave and smile as they sew (I’ve seen it). I can also tell you that many of the employees have been there for a more than a decade (all the years I’ve been going there). I particularly like Yasmine the owner, Gourmeet the snap expert and Keiko the cutter.

I’m telling you this about Dri-line, because I think it is import in these tough economic times to protect North American manufacturing jobs. To support businesses, that support thier workers, that support thier families that live in our communities.

I also have a fondness for Bamboo Baby Diapers, because I was priveledged to give my opinion and input during their design and production. I’m REALLY, REALLY good at giving my opinion … just sayin’.

It’s safe then to say that I’m thrilled that Dri-Line is going to give one of you THREE Bamboo Baby Cloth Diapers.

I have to tell you that I was VERY surprised at the HUGE range of samples Lisa of http://clothinglabels4u.com/ sent over to me to review. I guess with my limited manufacturing experience, I wasn’t thinking past the ‘care tag’ sewn into garments, or the ‘made by grandma’ tags you can buy at a craft store.

Just take a look … they have paper tags, recycled paper tags, tags with ribbon, tags with string, instruction card inserts, rubber tags, woven tags, adhesive tags, damask labels, satin labels, taffeta labels, embroidered badges and even a ruler.

Best of all Lisa of clothinglabels4u is great to work with. If you make your own products and need clothing labels of any sort clothinglabels4u is a great place to get them.

My first reaction when I opened the Gen-Y package for reveiw, was “WOW, this is gorgeous”. I was lucky and received the side snapping cover in this gorgeous Anna Maria Horner’s Chocolate Lollipop print.

You won’t want to cover this up! I’d say it’s a definite MUST for summer cloth diapering. Chocolate binding and snaps make for the perfect finishing touch.

Gen-Y cloth diaper covers are available in numerous sizes fitting babies 8 – 31+ lbs

Three rows of snaps make sure you get a comfortable fit for your baby.

Side snap covers are so easy to use and do a fabulous job of keep leaks away. An inner layer of PUL acts as a waterproof barrier, but is soft and flexible. The waist and legs are fitted with non-wicking stretch binding that gathers the fabric, yet is gentle on little legs and tummies. Poly-resin snap closures allow air circulation, are more difficult for your baby to undo, and wont snag or wear out with time. Machine wash/ dry with your other diapers… What’s not to love?

GEN-Y products are made in the USA.

I find side-snap covers work best with a fitted cloth diaper, but can also be used with a prefold with snappi (or pins).

Gen-Y covers are designed to wear hard and last. They are guaranteed against defects for six months from the date of sale to the original customer.

Gen-Y side snap covers are available in several great prints. Check out Gen-Y today and get a terrific side snapping diaper cover.

The laundry tote I received works well! I took advantage of it on a weekend trip to the mountains last weekend. You can imagine with the snow meltin and four kids, we had plenty of wet and soiled laundry. I managed to stuff a multitude of very muddy kids clothing into the tote. I was a wee bit worried about it soaking through and soiling our clean clothing for the trip home, but the tote held up wonderfully. The best part … I was able to just unzip it, throw the whole works into the machine when we got home … laundry tote and all.

The laundry tote is 14×26, it is made of heavy duty PUL and closes with a zipper to keep odors where they belong. A beautiful handle is constructed of two layers of cotton woven fabric, reinforced with heavy duty thread; it is just the right size to go over a door knob or wall hook. All seams and corners are reinforced.

Wool has got to be my favorite natural fabric for diapering (especially for night time), so I was looking forward to receiving the Tidbit-Couture organic wool diaper covers for review. I wasn’t disappointed. The 100% Organic Merino Wool is super soft to the touch. You’ll be more than pleased to use it on your baby.

I received both a snap closing organic merino wool wrap:

and a pair of organic merino wool pull-on longies:

The workmanship on both items is superb as you can see in the photo below.

The wrap is designed with two (2) layers of beautiful, durable, soft Certified 100% Organic Merino Wool and a multitude of snaps to ensure you get the right fit.

The longies are also designed beautiful, durable, soft Certified 100% Organic Merino Wool, but are one-ply outer-layer and a short inner-layer so as to offer double protection in the diaper area where is is most needed. Note: longies are not available for purchase until later this spring. I just loved these. I can’t imagine a more comfortable garment for a small baby (or big one)!

These fantastic wool diaper covers are available at Tidbit Couture in natural and several wash-fast hand-dyed colors colors. Price ranges from 29.95 – 36.95 depending on color and size.
